PBTC NEWSLETTER

    April 2018

 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hi PBTC Members,

I have a few quick updates for you following our Board of Directors meeting on Monday, April 23.

First, I want to thank Steve Adamson (Club Manager) for his great work running our PB Open Tennis Tournament. Thanks also to all our club members who participated: Hillary Park, John Carter, Phil King, John Flowers, Jacopo Bruni, Vincent Jaccobi, Arek Suszko, and also Jack Zezula, who made the finals of the M5.5s division. With over 200 total entrants, the tournament was a great success.

Next, we reviewed the situation with the tree in the main courtyard. The work that has been done appears to have saved the tree, at least for now, and the surrounding area is now passable again. We are planning to relocate the engraved tiles that were placed around the tree to the area in front of Court 4. If you'd like to comment on that (positively or otherwise) please do let me know your thoughts.

In other items, as I've mentioned in an prior newsletter, following our Internet posting for proposals for the club manager position for 2019-2021, we received a proposal from Steve and from no other candidates. The Board approved entering negotiations with Steve. We expect to begin discussions with Steve in May, so if you have any suggestions, comments, or other input to provide on this matter, please let me or any other board member know by May 4

Phil Tan (Director) reported that there are no current city-planned meetings regarding the De Anza Cove Revitalization Project. We will keep you posted on any developments as we learn about them. In the meantime, tennis remains in the city's plan and we continue to mention the importance of tennis in Pacific Beach to those involved in the process.

The Board also approved our usual summer free kids' clinic for students in the local area who haven't had the opportunity to participate in one yet. It's scheduled for June 25-28. These clinics have had a great response from the local community and many kids from prior years are now signing up for Steve's regular kids' clinics. Moreover, our free kids' clinic has been greatly appreciated by city representatives.

Our Flex League for M4.0 and O4.5 divisions is open for match play. If you've not signed up yet and would like to participate in some friendly competition, please let me or Steve know and we'll get you started.

In addition, I want to remind everyone that we have three great teaching pros at our club (Steve, Tom, and Uros) and if you'd like to improve your game you can schedule a private lesson or attend a group clinic with them. You'll find their phone numbers under "Instruction" on our website, or click on the following link: http://pbtennis.com/Lessons

Finally, the Board addressed resurfacing an additional court (Court 4) and this was approved subject to some further discussions with the court resurfacing company. We'll let you know more about this as the specific schedule for resurfacing is made clear.

We hope that you are enjoying the upgrades to our facility and are happy with all the goings on at the club. As always, if there's anything we can do to help you have more fun please let us know.

See you at the courts!

Best,

David Fogel
PBTC President 2018

P.S. The Turkey Tournament for this year is now scheduled for November 3, 2018. Mark your calendar and we'll have more information in the coming months.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ZACH SVAJDA!

Congratulations to Zach Svajda (our tennis pro Tom Svajda's son) for his outstanding performance at the 45th Annual Maze Cup held earlier this month in Berkeley, California. The Maze Cup is a prestigious, invitation only, team competition pitting the top junior boys and girls from Southern California against those from Northern California. This year, for the first time in 3 years, Southern California won the Maze Cup trophy! Zach was the only undefeated player in the entire competition - what an amazing achievement! The Maze Cup has had participants that have gone on to enjoy legendary professional tennis careers. Pete Sampras, Lindsay Davenport and Michael Chang, among others, participated as juniors. Zach’s future looks bright!
