August 2019

We are so proud to share that the tennis club’s very own Zach Svajda, has won the prestigious USTA National Championships Boy’s 18’s as a 16 year old and has earned himself a wild card into the main draw of the US Open in New York. This is a remarkable accomplishment as Zach will become one of the youngest competitors ever in the main draw of a US Open.

Child prodigy. We hear these two words float around in our community where we see a child exceeding, if not surpassing accomplished adults in either sports, academics, or the arts. Most of the kids I coach excel in more than one of these categories which by definition is remarkable in so many ways; they are the top of the top, the cream of the crop. They go to the best schools, score top in their class, become all Americans in D-1 sports, win gold balls at National Tournaments, and still find time to master an instrument. But in all my years of coaching I have only witnessed one child prodigy, a pure genius on the tennis court, Zach Svajda. Zach and I played a doubles tournament together at the Pacific Beach Tennis Club. We won. He was 7.

Zach’s hard work and dedication to the sport can be attributed to his father and coach, Tom Svajda. Tom Svajda, has coached and groomed Zach into being a world class athlete at the Pacific Beach Tennis Club since the day he could take his first steps. None of the success could be possible without the sacrifices the Svajda family have had to endure throughout this journey. The countless hours coaching on the court day in and day out, everyday, and even through holidays are all paying off and the rewards are sweet!

Our club is where the Svajda’s call home. We are very fortunate to share this moment and be a part of the journey with them. Way to go Zach! You and the family have worked so hard and we all wish you the best.

We held a successful July summer mixer last month, with our highest turnout of the year.  We even had an attendee from New York - I’m not sure whether or not he made the trip just for the mixer, but I’d like to think so.

Our August event - our official US Open Mixer - is on the 30th, so come out and join us for mixed doubles.  Let’s see if we can break our July attendance record! I look forward to seeing you there.

I hope you’ve had a chance to come to the club recently and have had a chance to play on courts 5 and 6.  The board continues its focus on investment in facilities and we hope you're pleased with the current progress. The replacement of a new south windscreen on court 8 is pending, and is expected to be completed by September.  Additionally, in the August meeting, the board has voted to have our court resurfacing contractor fix the cracks and resurface the backboard area of the club. Look for an improved backboard area to be available soon to further develop your game.
