CLUB UPDATES

Welcome to Summer!

In April, I provided an overview of the board's initiatives and priorities for the remainder of the year, and now in mid-summer, it’s a perfect time to reflect on what we’ve done and where there’s still room for improvement.

We’re looking forward to Courts 5 and 6 being resurfaced and we have the contractor scheduled to come in early August.  Our plan is to have these courts ready by the US Open Mixer that will take place on the last Friday of August (8/30).

Also related to facilities, the board has passed a motion authorizing Court 8 south-facing windscreen replacement.  This will create a more uniform appearance across the south facing courts and will reduce distractions from the pathway.

Additionally, we’re excited to diversify the club’s offerings and in late June, PBTC welcomed pickleball.  There are reduced rates offered to members - you can find all the details in the section below.

We’re holding monthly summer mixers and I’m happy to report for the month of June we had our highest turnout of the year.  We have been forging a positive relationship with Meetup San Diego and we look forward to hosting our next event in July.  I’ll be there and I hope to see you for some mixed doubles fun on 6/26.

As always, while there are many, many positive takeaways from the first half of the year, in my previous letter I mentioned our target of 10% membership growth for the year.  While we have seen increases in mixer attendance as well as increases in membership, we’re still aggressively pursuing outreach initiatives. Though, as I’ve stated previously, the best advocate for the club is you.  So if you’re pleased with the direction the club is headed, make an effort to reach out to acquaintances and see if they’re interested in joining. If, however, you find there are places the club could improve - please feel free to reach out to board@pbtennis.com

I’m looking forward to the months ahead to continue the board's efforts from the first half of year and I'm especially looking forward to enjoying our summer months for some more court time in PB.

SPRING FLEX LEAGUE WINNERS

Our spring flex league of the season completed this month.  The winners are:

  • 3.5: Chris Wakefield (Defending Champ)
  • 4.0: Sean Flatow
  • 4.5: Panto Mijatovic

For their achievements, they’ve each won a free half-hour lesson (or half-off an hour) from one of our club pros.  There are two more flex leagues this season - so there are more chances to win.

Interested in joining the flex league?  We’ve had recent feedback asking about coed leagues.  As always, all are welcome to join at any level. Please write to board@pbtennis.com indicating your interest.

PICKLEBALL at PBTC

Pickleball is easy to learn and lots of fun.  Indeed – it is addictive!!

San Diego pickleball was founded in 2016 and enjoyed 3 years of play at the Barnes Tennis Center.  Now we are thrilled to have a new home location at PBTC. Open Play is currently held on Sat and Sun from 11:30-3:00 on Court 7, and 12:00-3:00 on Court 8.  It’s “drop-in” so just come/go any time at your convenience during those time frames. The cost is $7/session ($4 for PBTC members). Gearbox Sports loaner paddles are available at no cost. You only need to bring your sense of humor and a fun loving spirit.

Experienced? Simply drop-in and rotate into a court at your ability level.

First timers? Please email to reserve your spot in the “Intro Lesson”. Cost is $20 ($15 for PBTC members) which includes a pass for a future visit. Intro Lessons are given just prior to the start of Open Play or right at the beginning of the session. Afterwards, players can rotate to other courts at their comfort level and stay for the remainder of the Open Play session at no extra charge.

Our website is the best source for updated info, monthly schedules and events. Check our Facebook page too. (www.sandiegopickleball.com)

We welcome you to come join us - our Club is very friendly and engaging. A Court Coordinator will greet you, introduce you around and get you involved.
