September 2019

CLUB UPDATES

With August behind us and the summer coming to an end, I hope you’ve all had a chance to come to the club recently and play on the newly resurfaced courts 5 and 6.  While we’re pleased with the courts, we’re now focused on further facilities improvements and we’re working with our vendor to come and replace the south windscreen on court 8 and start the resurfacing work in the backboard area.

Also, you may have noticed that the lower lights on Court 1 have been out.  New circuit breakers have been ordered to address this, and we’re working to have them replaced in a timely manner in preparation for the shorter days that are quickly coming.

In club news, it’s our pleasure to announce that we’re continuing our monthly mixers, and we’re hosting an event in September as well. We’ve had high interest this summer, and in August we had doubles play on six courts - the highest turnout of the year!  If you missed the last few events, this is your chance to come out and join us on the 27th for mixed doubles.

ZACH SHINES AT THE US OPEN

Bright lights. Big city. No problem.

PBTC’s Zach Svajda became one of the youngest competitors ever at the US Open this past August and he did not disappoint. You would think that you would be considerably nervous competing in your first Grand Slam match. I personally would have struggled to make contact with the ball. Not Zach. He won the first five games against ATP Tour veteran Paulo Lorenzi. Playing on Court 5, Zach had a healthy contingent of PBTC’s members  supporting his every shot (Damon and Trish Westwood, Linda Leibowitz, Jerry Carannante, Gary Kent and my family).

What started as a regularly attended US Open match soon became the match to watch. ESPN switched their coverage to court 5 and people crowded over railings just to get a peak at this American teenager who was up two sets to love. The crowd soon started to chant “Svajda” and the atmosphere would have made any New Yorker proud. Unfortunately, Zach’s body did not cooperate and the cramps took over. Zach showed the class act that he is as he stayed out to sign autographs after the match even though he could barely hold a pen. Ultimately, Zach embraced the electric atmosphere of the US Open and had the whole tournament buzzing about the “future of American tennis.”

You definitely made PBTC proud! We wish Zach much more success as he embarks on the very arduous journey of a professional tennis player.
