November 2017

Wishing all our members and their families best wishes for a joyous holiday season and a very happy new year!

Hi PBTC Members,

I'm pleased to report on club news for you following our Board of Directors meeting on Dec. 14, 2018. First, I want to congratulate Scott Karafin, Mihajlo Tomic, and Panto Mijatovic for their election to the Board of Directors for the 2018-2019 term. We appreciate their willingness to volunteer their time in support of the club and I look forward to working with them and the rest of the Board members in the coming year.

I'd like to thank Dale Jensen for his helpful contributions to our Board's activities during 2017. Dale will be departing the Board at the end of this year. His input was extremely valuable and instrumental in improving our club's facilities, and I've appreciated his skillful and knowledgeable insights. I also want to thank Cliff Robbins for his service to the Board and to the club for the past 4 years as president and vice president. Cliff will also be departing the Board at the end of this year. Cliff has given innumerable hours to benefit the club during his term on the Board both in terms of improving our facilities and offering guidance on the important matters our club faces. Further, he has been a good friend and mentor to me during my time on the Board and I can't thank him enough for his support. When you see Cliff or Dale at the club, please be sure to thank them for their service.

I'd also like to thank Steve Adamson for his terrific work as our club manager and director of tennis, along with our tennis professionals, Tom Svajda and Uros Petrojenivic.  I've had the opportunity to have instruction from all of them and we're very fortunate to have such terrific instructors here at our club.

There are others to thank as well: Our Turkey Tournament organizers and captains (Steve, Tracey, Amy, Hillary, and Gail -- thanks for the great day!), Dick Page, Directors Linda, Bob, Scott, and Phil, as well as everyone who's helped captain or play in one of our club leagues and helped us in the clubhouse this year. We have a great team and we've had a lot of fun in 2017. With apologies to anyone I may have left out, thank you for helping make this a great year.

In this edition of the newsletter, you'll hear from Phil Tan on an update on the De Anza Cove Revitalization Project. Phil has been a stalwart on this matter, keeping excellent vigilance on the developments at the city and elsewhere, and participating as our representative in public meetings. Please read his more detailed report below. At this time, the Board is not aware of any likely action on the project that would affect us prior to 2020, and that may stretch in time as well. Still, it's important that you are aware of the city plans and help support the club so we do our best to ensure that the opportunities for tennis in Pacific Beach grow in future. If you ever have any questions or would like an update on the status of the revitalization project, please feel free to ask me or Phil.

This year saw many improvements in the club's facilities, including our resurfacing Court 2, repairing windscreens on various courts, landscaping, and fixing all the lights so we can maintain the best nighttime playing conditions in the city for our members. We will be taking up the matter of resurfacing an additional court early in 2018. In the meantime, we continue to offer our flex leagues free for members, mixers (again, free for members), club tournaments, Turkey Tournament, San Diego Women's Tennis League, USTA and WTT league play, excellent tennis instruction for adults and juniors of all levels, as well as nice partnerships with some local community businesses that offer discounts for our members, including Woodstock Pizza, Boulevard Automotive, and others.

Thanks again for your support and please feel free to contact me with any questions and suggestions you have for improving our club now and in the future.

It's almost time for New Year's Resolutions and there are two I'd like to suggest to you: (1) Renew your PBTC Membership for 2018 (before January 1, please visit the pbtennis.com website or see Steve directly) and (2) Play more tennis in 2018!

Thanks again and see you at the courts!

David Fogel
PBTC President 2017

As 2017 comes to a close and we look forward to a new year, I'd like to offer my perspective on our club’s finances and improvements. I'm pleased to be able to report that our club finances remain sound, while several club improvements have been implemented this year.

I hope you've had a chance to enjoy the recently resurfaced court 2, and that you've noticed the new windscreen dividing courts 2 & 3. The lights are all fixed now, and the courts are bright and ready for your evening enjoyment. The windscreen on the west side of court 8 has now also been replaced. Vendor selection and financing for each of these efforts have been carefully planned, putting the club in good standing to look at resurfacing an additional court early in 2018 (subject to board approval).  We've also increased court washing and sweeping, and continue to explore methods to keep the courts and benches clean (Mother Nature sometimes makes that challenging).

We're hopeful that these improvements meet with your satisfaction and enhance your tennis experience. Please review the various activities and other benefits of membership, discussed elsewhere in this newsletter. We hope you consider these improvements and benefits, and if you've not yet renewed your membership for 2018 that you join us during this renewal period to continue to be part of our PBTC tennis community. Membership at PBTC is one of the best tennis values you can find in San Diego! There are savings if you renew by December 31st 2017.

Renewal information:

  • Individual Membership Renewal: $225 (after Jan 1st: $245)
  • Family Membership Renewal: $325 (after Jan 1st: $345)

PBTC Treasurer, 2017

Dear PBTC members,

At the public meeting on December 5 the Mission Bay Park Committee voted on a plan alternative that includes tennis courts and will relocate PBTC to the southwest, the area currently occupied by the San Diego Mission Bay Boat & Ski Club.

The next steps for the city are to draft amendment language for the Mission Bay Park Master Plan which will be presented to MBPC in the Spring of next year. This will include the beginnings of environmental review, so the process will get even messier and take a long time. It is important to note that PBTC will remain at its current location until at least 2020, and possibly for much longer. In the meantime, I will try to find the best way to make an impact. I will be meeting with a staff member from Lori Zapf's office on December 18 at the club.

As always, thanks for supporting PBTC and let me know if you have questions or comments.

Phil Tan

Director, PBTC Board 2017

The San Diego Women's Tennis League starts its Winter season in January. The 4.0 team plays on Friday mornings, 3.5 team on Tuesday mornings, and 3.0 team on Wednesday mornings. We will have 2 WTT leagues playing in the Winter. The 3.5 team plays on Monday evenings and the 4.5 team on Thursday evenings. There will be a USTA 9.0 mixed team playing on Saturday afternoons, beginning in January.

Our PBTC Flex Leagues have been a big success and the Board has approved running a new flex league from JANUARY 1 through MARCH 15 (The Winter 2018 Flex League). Playoffs will follow. Divisions are planned in the W3.5, M4.0,and O4.5 levels, but we're pleased to open a M3.5, or even a doubles league if there's sufficient interest. Just let David or Steve know if you'd like to sign up for any division. And... this time there's an even nicer reward than a trophy awaiting the winner of each division: Free entry into the Pacific Beach Open Tennis Tournament, held April 6-8, 2018, in the corresponding NTRP division. That's right, if you win your division, your entrance into our great club tournament in April is free. Mark your calendars and we'll see you at the courts!
