February 2018

Hi PBTC Members,

I hope you're enjoying our great winter weather and having fun on the tennis courts. I have a few items to update you on following our recent Board of Directors meeting on February 13.

First, I'd like to address the issue with our tree in the main courtyard. As you know, the tree's roots have become an issue, making the area of engraved tiles uneven and unsuitable for walking over. We've had a tree professional give us advice on what to do. One option is to lace the tree, which will cause it to grow more vertically rather than horizontally, keeping the spread of the roots to a minimum. This is an attractive option but it alone would not do anything to improve the surrounding area. Another option is to remove the tiles, replacing them elsewhere on the club grounds, then grinding the roots of the tree to level the surface. After that we could plant other foliage around the tree. Root grinding may, however, cause the tree to suffer and potentially die, requiring it to be removed eventually. We do not know the odds of that possibility, but we have to recognize that it is a possibility.

We are aiming to have the issue with the tree resolved prior to our upcoming USTA club tournament April 6-8. Before taking definitive action, for which we will do our best to save the tree while beautifying the area, we'd like to ensure all members have the opportunity to share their thoughts on courses of action. So if you do have a thought for us, please email me at david_fogel_nsi@yahoo.com and share it before February 23. The Board will likely be taking action after that.

Second, the Board approved moving ahead with resurfacing Court 1. Steve will be contacting Ferandell (the company that resurfaced Court 2) to assess the time/cost for proceeding. Presuming that costs are within our budget, we are aiming to have this resurface completed before the USTA tournament as well.

Third, our Aussie Open mixer was rained out, and we're looking to have a rain check mixer, so please stay tuned for more on that. We'll have additional information about our annual Turkey Tournament and other events to be held during the year after our meeting next month, which is scheduled presently for March 19.

As always, if I can be of any help, please feel free to email or call me at 858-349-0848 anytime.

See you at the courts!

PBTC President 2018

The PBTC Board has recently renewed our Subcommittee on the De Anza Revitalization Plan, to be chaired again by board member Phil Tan. Please volunteer to serve on this subcommittee if you wish to be more involved in promoting the interests of our club in the De Anza area now and in the future. The subcommittee will be meeting soon to review what has happened and what is next, and review our action items to continue to ensure that our interests are included in the city's plans for our area. To volunteer, or for more information, contact Phil at ptphiltan@gmail.com.
