July 2018

Hi PBTC Members,

I hope you enjoyed the Wimbledon semis and finals, as well as our own Wimbledon club mixer. Now it's time for the summer series of tournaments leading up to the US Open. In the meantime, here's a recap of what's going on at the club following our recent Board meeting on July 11.

The Board approved Steve Adamson's contract to serve as club manager for the three-year period of 2019-2021. We're very pleased to have Steve continue on with the club and based on all the feedback we've received, we expect you are as well.

We had a great free junior tennis clinic at the end of June, which went very well (thanks to Steve for running it), and we now have multiple junior clinics going on during the summer from 9a to 2:30p weekdays. We also had the lights on Court 4 replaced as needed, which now frees us up to have Ferandell do the resurfacing (expected in August).

The spring flex leagues concluded with Sean Flatow defeating Jerry Carannante for the M4.0 title and Panto Mijatovic getting the better of Rafa Benevides for the O4.5 title. Congrats to all the finalists! Our summer flex leagues are now in session, with the addition of an M3.5 division. We'd also love to bring back the W3.5 division if there's interest. Remember, all participants are playing for the opportunity to win 50% off of a lesson with the PBTC tennis pro of his/her choice. That's undoubtedly our best flex league prize so far!

We've continued working on the area where the engraved bricks will be placed. The next step is for Steve to get the sand required to complete the job. I hope this will be finished before my next message to you in August. In addition, Phil reports that the next DeAnza Cove project meeting will be later this winter. Still, if you'd like to help the club and get involved with ensuring we make our best effort to have tennis in Pacific Beach during and after the project development, please contact Phil directly at ptphiltan@gmail.com.

Here are some other items of note:

1) Steve will be following up next month with information for our November Turkey Tournament.

2) The term of the current special use permit (SUP) from the city for our tennis courts runs through the end of December. We will be anticipating receiving a new SUP but we've not received guidance on this so far. When the prior SUP expired, it took a little time for the city to provide and negotiate terms for our club and this may be the case again. We will be doing our part to be proactive in attempting to receive a new SUP as soon as possible.

3) Elections for the Board of Directors are coming in about 3 months. If you'd like to be considered for one of four open positions, each being a two-year term (2019-2020), please let our club secretary Bob Miller know. You can reach him by email at rmm@robertmillerlaw.com

If I can be of any other help to you, please feel to contact me anytime.

See you at the courts!

Two players in Steve Adamson's Tennis Academy have also recently shone on the court. Read about them and Zach in an article published in the San Diego Community News by clicking on the link below.

Early this month, Zach Svajda participated in the invitation-only Boys & Girls 16's Intersectional Team Championships in Shreveport, Louisiana. This is a Level 1 National Ranking Tournament. Team matches are played on clay courts between teams (4 boys & 4 girls) from the 17 Sections of the USTA. Zach was one of four boys representing Southern California.

Zach won all of his matches, which were played in brutal heat and humidity. He was the only boy undefeated in singles and doubles of the 80 boys who competed in the tournament. PBTC is proud to claim Zach as one of our own!
