November 2017

Hi PBTC Members,

I hope you're doing great and are enjoying our wonderful tennis weather.

We had a lot of fun at the 42nd Annual Turkey Tournament this last Saturday. I'd like to thank Steve Adamson, Tracey Thompson, and Amy Endres for organizing the tournament, as well as all the team captains (Tracey Thompson, Amy Endres, Hillary Park, and Gail Knight) and of course the participants who helped make it a super event. You'll read more about it in this edition of the newsletter.

The election for the 2018-2019 Board of Directors is ongoing through December 7. You should have received a ballot already. If not, please let me know. You can return your ballot to the ballot box in the clubhouse or to me or Steve by email and we'll place it in the box for you.

We have a couple of mixers planned for December 2017 and January 2018, which are described in more detail in the newsletter, and you'll also read more on the current status of the De Anza Cove Revitalization project, as well as club tennis clinics, and other happenings.

Please note that your 2018 membership dues are due by December 31, 2017 and if not paid by then your membership will lapse. So please ensure that you renew your membership either online or by visiting the clubhouse before the end of the year.  We have more club improvements in the works, fun events, great instruction opportunities, and several partnerships with local community vendors for you to enjoy in the new year.

In the meantime, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

See you at the courts!

David Fogel
2017 PBTC President

De Anza Revitalization & Impacts to PBTC

On November 16, an update to the De Anza Revitalization Plan was presented as an informational item to the San Diego Park & Rec Board.  A major revision to plan alternative 2 was shown, relocating the tennis facility adjacent to Rose Creek and just South of the youth baseball fields.  This is the same location as in plan alternative 1.  This revision is not yet posted on the website.

Reasons for Concern

It appears that the tennis facility will likely remain in the plans.  However, there are reasons for concern.  The city planner who presented the update, Robin Shifflet, stated that the land-grabbing interests of Campland (40 acres), golf (all 18 holes and driving range), and habitat restoration (25 acres or so) will definitely be included, leaving precious little space for other interests such as tennis. It is unclear how much space is being set aside for tennis and pickleball.  Furthermore, there is no parking lot adjacent to the tennis courts in the revised plan alternative 2, and the parking lot is too small in plan alternative 1.  It is also still uncertain how many tennis and pickleball courts will be included in the new facility.

Urgent Action Needed from PBTC Members

Those supporting Campland, golf, habitat restoration, and beach volleyball have been very vocal since the last public presentation in June, more so than those supporting tennis. Therefore, we at PBTC need to act to keep our momentum and preserve our interests.

How to Take Action

Please write to Robin Shifflet to express your concerns and support of tennis and pickleball. The email address is rshifflet@sandiego.gov

Please also attend the next meeting of the Mission Bay Park Committee, likely to occur next month, when they will vote on one of the plan alternatives.  This will be another opportunity for us to show that tennis matters! I will send out the date and time of the meeting as soon as they are posted.

Please contact me if you have any questions or thoughts.

Thank you for your support.

Phil Tan, PBTC Board 2017

World Kindness! That was the theme of this year's, members-only Turkey Tournament and what a fun tournament it was! A special thanks to Tracey Thompson and Amy Endres who spent countless hours preparing for this annual event. Patriotic cupcakes, a taco cart, and amazing tennis; who could ask for more? We had our long time regulars such as Gail Knight, Dan Kindred, John Westwood, and tournament originator Ted Hohner share the court with new members Mike Ericson, Jon Schimmer, and Alisa Le. Congratulations to team 'Random Acts of Tennis' who took home the title/turkey and will have bragging rights until next year.

See below for photographs from the fun day.
