PBTC NEWSLETTER

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hi PBTC Members,

Fall is in the air and that means some nice weather for tennis at the club. Here's a quick update on things for you.

We have all the approvals in place for our resurface of Court 2. Steve Adamson is scheduling a date with the resurfacing company and we're hopeful that the resurface will be complete before our Turkey Tournament, but either way it will be done as soon as their schedule allows. We're also pursuing formal bids to replace the lights on the courts to ensure that we have everything ready as the days get shorter and we all enjoy some nighttime tennis after work. We expect to have a final decision on a service provider for that at our next meeting on October 9, 2017 (6:15p at the clubhouse).

The flex league is in full swing for the M4.0 and O4.5 divisions. We unfortunately did not receive a sufficient number of players for a W3.5 or a doubles league but we'll try again in the new year. You can join the current divisions at any time up to the conclusion of this season, October 31. Just contact me or Steve to join in the fun.

Turkey Tournament is open for sign-ups and it's important that you sign up by the end of the month. Remember, this year it's members only. You'll see more information on this inside the newsletter.

In addition, Phil Tan will be reporting on the status of the De Anza Cove Revitalization Project and give you the information you need to know about the city's and other organizations' plans for our area.

This week, we're welcoming a new tennis professional to our club, Uros Petronijevic. Uros is an excellent teacher and player and is looking forward to working with us. You'll find more information on Uros in the newsletter.

Elections for the 2018-2019 term on the Board of Directors are around the corner. If you would like to run for one of the three open positions, please let our club secretary, Bob Miller (rmm@robertmillerlaw.com), know by October 15, 2017.

See you at the courts!

David Fogel

PBTC President, 2017

DE ANZA REVITALIZATION PLAN - UPDATE

Hi PBTC Members,

On June 29, the Ad-Hoc Subcommittee of the De Anza Revitalization Plan presented two plan alternatives, with both containing a new tennis facility with a clubhouse.  A public comment period followed until July 29 - thanks to all who submitted comments in support of tennis.  Although our status seems secure, I have been told that "nothing is fixed" and that "everything is still on the table" regarding all the interests that want some of the land.  Therefore, I have recently met with city officials to promote our interests and concerns, including Anthony George in Mayor Faulconer's office, and Craig Hooker and Clark Taylor in the San Diego Planning Department.  I also intend to meet with James McGuirk in Councilperson Lori Zapf's office.  Anthony George played tennis in high school and is now an advocate for our club.

At these meetings, I have been promoting our wishes for an expanded 12 tennis- and 4 pickleball-court facility with lighting and a clubhouse, and protection from baseballs and golf balls.  For the location in plan alternative 1, next to Rose Creek, I have expressed issues with bird droppings on the courts; for the location on plan alternative 2, next to Grand Avenue, I have expressed issues with being next to the busy street.  I have also made another proposal of keeping our facility at the current location, pointing out that this would possibly be the least disruptive to the tennis community during the revitalization process.

The next public presentation will be to the Mission Bay Park Committee, either on October 3 or November 7.  This will be an opportunity to get the latest information and also to voice your support of tennis.  I will inform you when I get more information.

Best regards,

Phil Tan

PBTC Board of Directors - Head of De Anza Special Committee
